There’s no single answer to how long exterior paint lasts in Brisbane. It depends on how well the surface was prepared, the quality of the coating, how much sun and rain the wall gets and how the building’s been looked after. The good news is that most of those things are within your control.
What decides how long paint lasts
Preparation. This comes first for a reason. Paint applied over dirt, chalk, mould or damp will fail early no matter how good the product is. Proper cleaning, repairs and priming set the life of the finish.
Coating quality. Quality exterior acrylics with good UV and mould resistance hold up better than budget products. The cheapest option usually costs more over time because it needs repainting sooner.
Sun exposure. North and west-facing walls take the brunt of Brisbane’s UV, so paint on those sides fades and chalks first. Darker colours absorb more heat and can age faster than lighter ones.
Moisture. Rain, humidity and leaks all stress paint. Walls that stay damp grow mould and blister sooner, and a small leak can wreck a wall’s finish in a season.
The surface. Brick, render, timber and metal all age differently. Timber moves and needs more upkeep. Rendered surfaces can crack and let water in.

- Painting over damp, dirty or chalky surfaces
- Blocked or leaking gutters and downpipes
- Skipping primer on bare or repaired areas
- Painting in the wrong conditions, such as in direct midday heat or just before rain
- Missed maintenance, like cracks that let water in

Signs it’s time to repaint
- Fading. Colour that has washed out, especially on the sunny sides.
- Chalking. Rub a hand across the wall and see if a powdery residue comes off.
- Cracking and flaking. Paint that splits or lifts is letting moisture in. Our posts on peeling paint and flaking and wrinkling explain the causes.
- Mould or algae. Green or black patches that keep coming back.
- Bare patches. Any spot where the surface below is showing.
Waiting until paint has failed usually turns a repaint into a repair job, so it’s worth acting when you first see the signs.
How to get more life out of a paint job
- Choose a quality coating suited to the surface
- Insist on proper preparation, including cleaning and repairs
- Keep gutters clear and fix leaks quickly
- Wash walls periodically to remove dirt and early mould
- Touch up small areas before they spread
