The Differences Between Interior & Exterior Paint

by | Interior Exterior Painting

Interior and exterior paints are built for different jobs. Exterior paint has to handle UV, rain, heat and mould, so it’s more flexible and weather resistant. Interior paint is made for cleanability, low odour and a good finish in a room people live and work in. Using one in place of the other usually ends badly.

What exterior paint is designed to do

Exterior paint faces sun, rain and temperature swings every day. It’s formulated with UV-resistant pigments and flexible binders so it can move with the surface without cracking. Most also contain mould and mildew inhibitors, which matters in humid Brisbane.

What interior paint is designed to do

Interior paint is built for appearance and cleaning. It’s usually lower in odour, dries to a smoother finish and is designed to take scrubbing in high-use rooms. It doesn’t need the weather resistance of an exterior product, so it isn’t built to cope with it.

Why you shouldn’t swap them

  • Exterior paint indoors can have a stronger smell and can release more fumes in closed rooms.
  • Interior paint outdoors tends to chalk, fade and fail quickly in sun and rain.

Sheen and finish

Sheen affects both look and durability. Flat finishes hide imperfections and suit ceilings. Satin and semi-gloss finishes are easier to wash and suit walls in busy areas, trims and wet rooms. Exterior walls commonly use low sheen, while trims and doors often use a higher sheen for durability.

Special cases

Some areas sit between the two. Verandas and covered outdoor areas are exposed to weather and humidity, and bathrooms and laundries are wet but indoors. Choose a product made for those conditions. Our guide to stopping mould coming back in Brisbane humidity covers wet rooms.

Quality matters in both

A good product does more than a cheap one, whichever category it’s in. Read what makes a quality paint to see what to look for, and how to choose the right paint for Queensland’s climate for the exterior side.

Match the paint to the place

That’s the rule. If you’re unsure which product suits your job, ask. See our interior house painting and exterior house painting services, or request a quote.
