A quality paint covers well, sticks, resists the weather and keeps its colour. It usually costs more per litre, but it often needs fewer coats and lasts longer, which makes it better value over time. The label and data sheet tell you more than the price tag does.
What’s in the tin
Paint is made of pigments, binders, solvents (water or otherwise) and additives. Pigments give colour and coverage, and binders hold the film together and stick it to the surface. Better paints generally have higher-quality binders and more pigment, which shows up in how well they cover and how long they last.
What to look for
- Coverage. A paint that hides the old colour in fewer coats saves time and product.
- Adhesion. It should bond to the surface and stay put.
- Durability. Look for UV, mould and stain resistance for the room or wall it’s going on.
- Washability. Interiors in busy areas should stand up to cleaning.
- Low odour or low VOC. Useful for occupied rooms and sensitive settings.
- Colour retention. Better pigments fade less in strong sun.
Match the paint to the job
The best paint on paper can be the wrong one for the surface. Wet rooms need mould-resistant products, exteriors need weatherproof ones and floors need coatings made to be walked on.
