Preparing gutters for painting means cleaning out debris, washing the surface, removing loose paint and rust, repairing damage and priming bare metal. It’s the least glamorous part of the job and the part that decides how long the paint lasts. Skip it and the new coat will peel.
1. Check the gutters are worth painting
Start by looking at their condition. Gutters with heavy rust perforation, splits or sagging joints may need repair or replacement, not just paint. Painting over a leak hides it for a few weeks and then lets it return. If water is getting into the wall or fascia, fix that first.
2. Clear the debris
Remove leaves, dirt and sludge from the gutters and check that downpipes are flowing. Blocked gutters overflow, hold water against the metal and cause rust from the inside out.
3. Wash the surface
Wash away dirt, chalk and mould with a suitable cleaner and rinse well. Paint doesn’t stick to grime. Let everything dry fully before going further.
4. Remove loose paint and rust
Scrape and sand back any flaking paint to a firm edge. Remove surface rust down to clean metal, and treat what’s left with a rust converter or suitable primer. Rust that’s painted over keeps spreading underneath.
5. Repair and seal
Fill small holes and seal open joints with a sealant made for gutters. Check the fixings and brackets while you’re up there.
6. Prime
Bare metal needs a suitable primer before topcoats. Use a product designed for the type of gutter you have, because galvanised, zincalume and painted steel all behave a little differently. Follow the manufacturer’s data sheet.
A note on safety
Gutter work means ladders and heights, and it’s one of the more common ways people get hurt around the house. On two-storey homes and commercial buildings, it’s a job for a professional with the right equipment. Where access is difficult, rope access reaches roof edges without scaffold.
